Make an Informed Choice

As an Eco Resort, we are continually looking at ways we can reduce our impact on the local community. Many of our customers ask us, whether some activities are good or bad and whilst we may have strong views on some activities, we do not feel it is our role to stop you having fun, but it is our role to provide you with information that will enable you to make a decision you are happy with.

Fishing Tours
I, Mellisa, can think of nothing worse than spending a day fishing! It is not a sport I enjoy but I have many family members who love it. You will notice that we do not have any leaflets regarding Fishing Tours at the resort. This is not because we disagree with fishing, but the tours we have seen and have been made aware of go to Koh Haa or Koh Rok. Both of these islands are within the Koh Lanta Marine Park and fishing is banned in these areas. You also may well be fishing where there are snorkellers and divers. This could cause an injury to them and ruin your chances of catching anything.

Fishing boat in Marine Park
If you want to go fishing, try to locate a tour operator that does not operate in illegal waters.

Eating Fish and Shark
You will see 2 main types of fishing here, that from a longtail (a traditional Thai fishing boat) and much larger boats trawling (use a very large net between 2 boats). The Longtail crews use a number of methods to catch fish, large nets, lines (with hooks on) and cages. The longtails, who are fishing here, are our local fisherman, so we do want to support them. However using large nets (especially those between the large boats), is indiscriminate and everything in the way of the net is captured and often the net gets snagged on coral, further damaging the marine life.

Sharks receive a bad rap by the media, but the sharks we have in our waters here are not dangerous and, as an apex predator, are vital to marine population. Sharks take many years to reach sexual maturity and many shark species are endangered now because of the popularity of Shark Fin Soup. Shark Fin Soup is an Asian delicacy which is highly prized and hugely expensive. Because of this, many sharks are caught eat year, their fins removed and then the shark is thrown back to die.

Please support our local fisherman (buy from the local stalls not the supermarkets) but please try to avoid eating endangered species, especially shark products. If you choose to not eat at a restaurant because they are selling Shark Fin Soup, tell the owner before you leave. If enough potential customers tell them the reason they are walking away, maybe they will change their menu.

Elephant Trekking
Almost every week I am asked by guest whether the elephants are treated well here and whether they should go on the Elephant Tours.

When I came to Lanta, one of the things I loved the most, was seeing an Elephant walking down the road to have a swim in the sea. This beautiful, gentle and majestic giant is magical up close and I admit I have ridden one in the past and I loved every minute of it. I have also been to an Elephant Sanctuary in Sri Lanka and seen the damage that we have done to these wonderful animals.

Many of the practises used by some Mahouts, to train the elephants are cruel and the Elephants are often chained by their ankles and kept in poor condition. Baby elephants are often taught silly tricks which demean this magnificent creature.

A year ago, we had a guest who worked for an International Wild Animal Welfare organisation. His role was to visit tour organisations that use wild animals and report back to the government of the country on ways to improve the treatment and care of animals. We took the opportunity to ask him about the elephants here. He said the ones that he had seen here were not, by any means, the worst treated he had seen, but they were, not at all, the best.

So if you really want to go Elephant Trekking, look into it carefully, research the tour company, maybe choose a well run sanctuary instead and before you pay, look at the animals.

Finally, help us to promote best practice on the island. Please provide us feedback on tours you have undertaken on the island and whether you saw good or bad practices. We take your feedback incredibly seriously and use this to recommend tours to other guests (remember we live here and very rarely participate in tours).

Arriving At Krabi Airport

We are having a number of guests arriving at Krabi Airport and booking the ferry/minibus to Koh Lanta and the journey taking over 4 hours. So here is some up to date information regarding getting to the island in Green Season:

1. There is NO passenger ferry in the Green Season, only in the High Season, we expect this service to resume sometime in October. The only ferry that is running at this time of year is the Car Ferry, there is no port for this in Krabi, so there is no need to go to a 'port in Krabi.'
2. Krabi is the opposite direction from Krabi Airport to Koh Lanta. So any tour agency at the airport offering to take you into Krabi first is usually doing this, to increase the amount they can charge you and to leave you in a tour agency in town, in the hopes you will buy tours or accommodation from them.

3. I believe there is at least one of the tour agencies in the airport, which offer to book the minibus and have it pick you up from the airport after it leaves Krabi. Please hunt around.

4. There are only minibuses, hourly during the day, these stop at about 4/5pm. After this time, your only option is a private Taxi.

5. A private Taxi to the island costs about 2,500 baht, it is bookable with us (we need 24 hours notice) or at the airport. If there are a few people at the airport who want to go to the island, hire a taxi for all of you (the price difference will be minimal and the journey time will be halved).

6. The car ferry is approximately 1 hour from the airport and runs constantly throughout the day from 6am to 10pm. The ferry itself takes about 15 minutes to Koh Lanta Noi. There is now a bridge between Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai (our island) so your total journey time should be less than 2 hours.

If you are in any doubt about your options or which flight you should book, email me directly. I can give you up to date and honest advice and will work with you to find the cheapest and best option for you. If I know your flight times and I have other guests arriving on the same flight (or one at a similar time), I can put you in touch or organise you to share a taxi.

We have been a bit busy!

Whilst we were closed for 3 weeks in May and since then, we have been busy making some updates and changes to our resort.

Our Fan Bungalows all used to have bamboo roofs, but we found that they only lasted a short period of time and were unable to stand up to the strong storms we can sometimes have here. So we have now replaced them all. The Cozy Fan Bamboo Bungalows now have a higher roof in the bathrooms, making the room feel much larger and some shade offered over the balconies. The Standard Fan Bamboo Bungalows had the ceilings renewed and a spruce up with some paint.

All of our Air Con Bungalows have now been redecorated with our company colours and there have been some modifications in the rooms, to improve the overall look of the rooms.

All our staff have been busy, painting, staining and varnishing our tables and chairs (in the bar, restaurant and rooms) and the bar itself.

Big thank you to all our staff who helped to make our resort look beautiful (and thanks to the rain for making the gardens green).

Why not come and see for yourself?

Open Again!

After a very busy High Season for us and our staff, we closed the resort for 3 weeks in May. Nick and I went for our first real holiday in 3 years in Australia and we know we cannot go away without getting the staff some presents!

But our staff have been busy in our absence:

1. New roofs for the Cozy Fan Bungalows, which has made the bathrooms bigger.
2. Completed the new roofs for the Standard Fan Bungalows, just in time for the storms.
3. Re-painting of the Air Con Bungalows and Family Bungalows, and revarnishing of the furniture.
4. Re-painting of the bar area and re-varnishing of the bar and all the tables and chairs.
5. TripAdvisor awarded us a Certificate of Excellence for our 3 consecutive year!

Thank you to all our guests who rated us. We appreciate the feedback and award.

We opened on the 28th May with 4 Bungalows checking in. Bookings for June are looking great and Christmas is starting to book up!

If you would like to stay with us, contact me directly for the best prices and if you wish to stay from late December to Mid February please email me as soon as possible.

Hopefully see you soon!

Back Home!

I have been a diving instructor for many years, but since selling my dive centre and starting our own resort, I have dived very little, despite the fact that Nick learnt to dive so we could dive together.

It has been a busy high season, and as it quietens down, Nick and I have some more time to ourselves, so Nick suggested we going diving. As we were short on time, we needed to be back to work at 3pm, we decided to opt for our favourite speedboat dive centre, Dive and Relax, so we could be back with plenty of time to spare.

Dive and Relax is an excellent, well run and professional dive centre, who many of our customer's dive with, either from our recommendation, or because of their high rating on TripAdvisor. We were told to join them for a briefing at 8.30am at their shop on the beach. Greg, their Boat Manager, and an old friend of mine met us, gave us a wonderful cup of coffee and briefed us on the day. My dive gear was taken off me, a real luxury for someone who is used to carrying the tanks and dive gear, and all set up for me.

After a short boat trip on their well organised speedboat we were at Koh Haa. Koh Haa is one of the top 3 diving destinations from the island and a genuine hit for new and experienced divers, as it has calm, clear waters, great visibility, caverns and caves and much flora and fauna to view. We jumped off the boat at the Caves, on Koh Haa 5, which although I must have done a thousand times is still a favourite of mine. There are 3 large caves which, because of their size, are well lit, so no need for torches, 2 of the caves connect, so you can swim from one to the other. After the caves you can explore the many large boulders housing all sorts of aquatic life, including something I had not seen in a while, a seahorse.

After the dive, we were quickly picked up by the friendly boat crew, our tanks changed for us, and lunch and drinks served.

The final dive was around Koh Haa 6, another favourite of mine. As soon as the water touched my face and I breathed my first breath underwater, I relaxed, I forgot all about the resort and remembered why I loved diving so much.

Half way round the dive, our guide signalled to us that he had seen a turtle, my favourite underwater animal, and the reason I became a diving instructor. They are truly beautiful creatures and no matter how many times I see them I cannot get enough. They effortlessly glide through the water, with seemingly no care in the world and are not bothered by divers, unless they get too close. It was a magnificent end to a wonderful day off.

We were back on Lanta just after 1pm, which was just enough time to have a small rest, shower and change for work.

Nick and I would like to thank Cameron (the dive centre owner), Greg and his wonderful team for a lovely day and I really hope I can repeat this again real soon. I happily recommend this dive centre to our guests, because of their professional attitude, attention to safety and happiness of their guests. They truly deserve their TripAdvisor rating!

Thanks Guys

Mellisa & Nick
