May's Kitchen, not just a fabulous Thai Restaurant

May's Kitchen is one of our most favourite restaurants, but not just because of the great food and company. May has a big heart and yesterday her heart was broken.

May went to the beach with her family and her beautiful baby grand daughter and was devastated to see that she was playing not with shells but plastic.

It happens every green season, as the seas change rubbish from the seas gets washed up onto our shores here on Lanta, if we waited until high season, most of it would go back, but the good people of Lanta do not want to gift the world this rubbish and so many, like May, choose to clean the beaches for the good of Lanta and the rest of the world.

May and her team picked up 68 bags of rubbish in just over 1 hour, she also rang the Orbotor (the Mayor of the island) and gave him a good talking to too!

She transformed 120 metres of Long Beach and ensured that her grand daughter could find shells again on the beach.

Love you May xxx

Exciting Times in Koh Lanta

Yesterday, we at Mook Lanta Eco Resort, were lucky enough to have most of the Dive Centres on Lanta use our bar to discuss an exciting new project: Coral Propagation for Koh Lanta, which a few have been working on for some time.

Dive Centre Owners and Managers watching the Ocean Quest video
A video was shown to the owners and managers of the Dive Centres regarding the work Anuar Abdullah has been doing in Thailand and across Asia as a whole. Anuar is the CEO and Founder of Ocean Quest and is collaborating with Reef Guardian Thailand and the Department of National Parks in Thailand to set up projects with the local community to regenerate the coral in the surrounding seas.

Anuar gave an interesting speech after the video, he has been researching Coral Propagation for over 20 years and says he is frustrated that environmental research and money has focused on reporting the damage to the coral around the world, but very little focus, effort and money has been spent on how to fix it.

With a small amount of training, Coral Propagation is relatively easy to do. Anuar has been growing coral for nearly 20 years! He compares it to 'splicing' a tree and says with very little effort and a little knowledge, everyone can help to repair the oceans. He gave an example that at piece of coral, only 1cm in size can, with the right treatment and right conditions, grow to 15cm within 18 to 26 months. But Anuar says 3 special areas need to be created for this to be a success:

1. Nursery - An area where coral can be grown from small live parts of coral.
2. Hospital - An area where 'sick' coral can be quarantined, treated and helped to recover.
3. Home - An area where the new coral can call home.

Anuar and his team have successfully achieved this elsewhere in Asia, most notably Malaysia, and he is keen to start projects around Thailand.

Dive Centre Owners and Managers listening to Anuar Abdullah's Speech
So he is working with Koh Lanta Dive Centres and the Marine Park to train instructors to become Coral Propagation Trainers to enable them to train divers to help with this work. This could potentially mean that each dive centre has it's own trainer and maybe it's own area, that they monitor, manage and grow.

The enthusiam from the Dive Centres was palpable and the meeting was exciting to listen to. It costs 15,000 baht to train a trainer, but he, in turn, could train hundreds. All the Dive Centres fully supported the project and many were keen to take the next steps, as were we. Nick and I instantly agreed that we will sponsor a trainer on the island and we hope many other Resorts will follow suit. How incredible would it be for Koh Lanta to lead Thailand in Coral Propagation?

I am excited for the future, obviously we cannot repair the corals overnight, but we can stop the degradation and start building coral gardens for the future.

Big thank you to Anuar, for a very interesting talk, and all the Dive Centres who participated.

Open All Year!

Mook Lanta Eco Resort is open throughout the year, but during Green Season our restaurant will be only open for breakfast and the bar is open until 7pm everyday.

Locals, expats and guests from other resorts are more than welcome to come and enjoy our delicious breakfast with limitless fresh coffee and free WiFi. Why not try our famous Mook Muffin?

Green Season (May to October) is a great time to visit the island, it doesn't rain everyday (but expect some whilst you are here), it is always hot but the weather is a little less predictable. At this time the locals and expats have more time for you and of course the rooms are less than half price!

We are getting quite a few bookings, so if you would like to book, please do this direct, as we will beat any of our booking agent prices!

Big Mook Lanta Thank You!

We have had a superb High Season and we are looking for a fun-packed, but a little bit more relaxed Green Season.

All through High Season our guests have been leaving their beach toys, mats, games etc with us so that other's can enjoy them. Throughout the season I have seen children (and adults) sneak to the box to borrow a bucket and spade, a boogie board, a football and more.

At the end of April every year, the Children of the Forest Foundation, come to the island to enable the children they look after to have a holiday. The Children of the Forest look after orphaned Burmese children (and those left by their parents) on the Thai side of the Burma/Thailand border. These children have no rights in Thailand, they cannot gain asylum or gain citizenship and so have no access to healthcare, schooling and employment.

Children of the Forest provide a safe shelter for these children and offer them schooling. healthcare and food.

Every year they ask the people of Koh Lanta to help and each year, hotels give free rooms, restaurants provide food and boat companies provide boat trips. The local and expat community also give clothes, toys and sweets for the children.

So Mook Lanta has taken all the toys etc left by our guests, as well as gifts donated by our guests and ourselves to Time For Lime Cookery School, where the children will be enjoying a day at the beach. Our bags were full of:
  1. A Boogie Board
  2. Water Guns
  3. Football
  4. Bats and a ball
  5. Fins
  6. 2 Bucket and spades (the deluxe versions with everything you could imagine)
  7. Lifejackets
  8. Beach Shoes
  9. Arm Bands
  10. Mask and snorkels
  11. and much much more!
Thank you for helping us to REDUCE our use of plastic toys, REUSE the toys you have bought and RECYCLE them to help kids who have never had a day at the beach. We still have the box at reception and are happy to receive donations which will be shared with our guests and these lovely kids next year.
